Botulinum for Masseter

Facial shape is determined by the combination of skeletal structure, muscular components, and soft tissues (skin, subcutaneous tissue, and fat pads). Each plays a distinct role in defining facial contours. Specifically, the various characteristics of these elements and their relationship contribute to making the lower third of the face either square or oval. This appearance is typical in Asian patients but also manifests in Caucasian patients with characteristic dento-skeletal conformation or those with significant activity of the extrinsic masticatory muscles, to which the masseter muscle belongs.

While surgical intervention is required in the first two cases, botulinum toxin is effective in softening facial features through a simple outpatient procedure.

Treatment Day and Initial Results

The treatment consists of small injections on each side of the masseter muscle. After the procedure, patients can immediately resume social activities with the only restriction being to avoid chewy foods in the days following the injections. Volume reduction occurs progressively, and a follow-up appointment at 1 month post-treatment allows for any necessary touch-ups.

Duration of Masseter Botulinum Results

The effect persists for 4-6 months, and repeated treatments can extend the duration until result maintenance. This widely recognized procedure can also be used in cases of bruxism and, when combined with orthodontic/gnathological treatment, provides noticeable patient benefits. Clinical evaluation will identify patient issues and determine the appropriate treatment path.
